Skirting
Prior to sending a fleece for carding it is
best to take out the less desirable parts, or skirt the fleece.
Remove all of the short or greasy outer edges of the fleece
and Removal of the neck and back wool is recommended, as
this is often
tender, mushy and may have a lot of vegetable matter.
Hairy wool at the rear of a fleece is no problem to card
but can make the finished product less desirable.
All seeds, dags, foreign matter should be removed, doing
this saves on the price you pay.
Some tender fleeces do card but for spinning it is preferable
to have sound reasonable length fibre.
The tips in Woolly Hogget fleeces can break off, showing
up in the carding, therefore are best not sent to be
carded.
